Barnacle goose

This sea goose spends its entire life near the coast. You can recognize you from afar by your white head and black neck. Their breeding grounds are on the Russian Arctic Coast as well as in Greenland and Svalbard. The Russian population, which currently numbers around 120,000 animals, overwinters in the German Wadden Sea.

Fieldfare

It is about the size of a blackbird and, compared to the native thrush species, is strikingly brightly colored. The animals can be spotted quite often in our open terrain and in hedges in the winter months. Sometimes they even fall hungry en masse over the last fruit hanging on the trees.

Mountain finch

This bird, which is around 15 centimeters tall, can be easily distinguished from our native chaffinch by the orange-colored chest and shoulder. From October to April the animals can be seen in parks, gardens and beech forests. They also like to visit hung bird feeders with other finches. Are on their menu

Beechnuts, coarse seeds, cereals and nuts.

Redwing

It is one of the most common breeding birds in Scandinavia. As a winter guest she can be found here from the end of October to the beginning of April. It is about 21 centimeters tall and is therefore one of the smallest thrushes. Its flanks and the area under the wings is colored rust-red, which makes it easy to distinguish from the song thrush. On warmer days it prefers to feed on invertebrates and insects, but switches to berries in winter. If you plant apples in the garden in the cold season, these thrushes will not stay away for long.

Waxwing

The most noticeable feature of this winter guest is the pointed spring hood. The waxwing is one of the invasion birds that immigrate to us irregularly, but in large numbers. If the animals lack food in their breeding area, this phenomenon occurs with the onset of snowfall.

Tips

If you feed diversely in winter, winter guests will also find sufficient food. A mixture of peeled nuts, sunflower seeds, raisins, oat flakes, various seeds and a little chicken feed is well suited. The popular Tit dumplings(€ 9.99 at Amazon *) should not have a net, as the animals can get caught in it. In addition, put out halved apples.
