Which lavender should I plant as a border?

Use hardy cultivated forms of lavender as a border if you are at home in a rather rough area. French lavender or white-flowered varieties are generally not as tolerant of frost and could be damaged in winter without protection. They are better suited as a container plant or annual bedding.

What are the benefits of lavender?

Lavender gives your garden a Mediterranean flair during its flowering period and creates a little holiday mood. Depending on the selected variety, it gives off a sometimes quite intense scent. While the French lavender smells particularly pleasant, the spear lavender with its camphor-like smell should be able to keep aphids away from your beds. However, this scent is not particularly recommended next to your sitting area on the terrace.

Where does lavender grow and bloom best?

As a Mediterranean herb, lavender prefers a sunny location, it loves light and warmth. Persistent moisture is not good for it, so the soil should be sandy and dry. Lavender does not have a particularly high nutritional requirement, so it can be planted in poor soil.

How should I care for my lavender?

Cut back the lavender in spring to prevent lignification of the shrub. With a pruning right after flowering, you will often bring your lavender to a second flowering. You can fill scented cushions with the dried clippings.
