If a plant already exists, its shoots offer us a better alternative for propagation. The new plant inherits the properties of the mother plant. So you know what to expect. A cutting will also develop into a ready-to-harvest plant more quickly.

Suitable cuttings

A regularly cut basil plant will develop into a bushy shrub. You will have no problem finding a suitable cutting. So it is ideal:

  • the shoot is freshly cut
  • it shouldn't be lignified
  • the length should be at least 10 cm
  • lower leaves are removed

Ideal time for propagation

The best period for this type of propagation is from late summer to autumn. About when the edible shrub for the wintering have to move into the house.

Root cuttings in water

Put the cuttings in a glass filled with water, which you then place on a bright and warm window sill. As soon as the roots formed are 2-3 cm long, you should plant the cuttings in small pots. Use special herbal soil or lean Cactus soil.

Put cuttings in soil immediately

The rooting in the water glass is not absolutely necessary, because the cuttings also take root well in moist soil. Fill in small ones Growing pots(€ 16.68 at Amazon *) with Potting soil and insert the cuttings about 3 cm deep. The location should also be bright and warm. A plastic bag placed over the cutting promotes rooting. However, it must be ventilated regularly.

As soon as the first new leaflets show up, you know that the rooting has worked. You can soon plant the young plants in larger pots.

Tips

Shrub basil is not hardy. Wait until the ice holies in May before planting them in the bed. On warm days, however, you are welcome to put the young shrub basil outside temporarily.
