Many causes lead to leaf loss

There are many reasons why your yucca is shedding its leaves. Usually these initially change color yellow or brown, dry up and eventually fall off. With some clinical pictures only a few appear brownish spots on the leaves - which arise in the case of a fungal, bacterial or virus-related infection can spread quickly - resp. only the tips of the leaves turn brown or black. If only the bottom leaves occasionally turn yellow and die off, this is normal: this is how the yucca develops its trunk; it becomes bald from below and reproduces new shoots above. However, if the discolored leaves appear in the middle of the foreleg, there are other reasons behind it.

An overview of the possible causes

We have put together a brief overview of the possible causes for faster diagnosis.

  • Yellow / brown leaves, possibly with a soft trunk: Waterlogging
  • dried up leaves with dry substrate: too little water
  • Yellow leaves v. a. at the end of winter: wrong (too warm) winter, lack of light
  • Yellow leaves: lack of light
  • Yellow / brown leaves only on the side facing the sun: sunburn
  • Yellow / brown leaves without recognizable external causes or only leaf spots: disease or disease caused by fungus / virus / bacteria Pest infestation (v. a. on Gall mites respect, think highly of!)
  • Feel the fallen leaves and other leaves sticky at?

Appropriate countermeasures

It is well known that prevention is better than cure, which is why you should treat your yucca carefully and, above all, in a species-appropriate manner maintain should: Then you will most likely be spared worries about falling leaves. Should the plant still be affected, you should diagnose and treat it according to the following scheme. First, take a close look at the yucca:

  • Is it too dark or maybe in the blazing sun?
  • Is the substrate dry or rather moist?
  • Have you perhaps changed something recently, for example the watering interval or the location?
  • Has the yucca been moved to a new location too quickly?
  • Was the room yucca put outside or vice versa?
  • Are there any indications of a pest infestation?
  • Was the plant exposed to (cold) drafts?
  • Do other, neighboring plants also show the same symptoms?

Using this questionnaire, you can narrow down the possible cause more precisely and then act accordingly. This of course includes eliminating the cause - and accepting the damaged leaves, if they have not yet fallen off by themselves remove.

Tips

In severe cases - for example in the presence of wilt caused by waterlogging - only remains still to cut off the remaining healthy parts of the yucca and put them in fresh substrate for rooting plants.
