The first and most error-prone step: sowing

The first step in growing black salsify is also the step that harbors the most sources of error. Should be careless with the sowing therefore not proceed. There are several points to keep in mind before and during sowing.

Please note the following:

  • best period for sowing: late February to mid-March
  • in cool regions: postpone sowing to the beginning of April
  • do not use seeds that are more than a year old
  • Be careful with the fragile seeds
  • Before sowing: loosen the soil deeply (at least 30 cm deep)

The stem-shaped seeds of the black salsify are sown 2 cm deep. Advancing is not advisable, as the young plants are extremely sensitive. When planting in rows, there should be a distance of 6 to 10 cm between the plants and a distance of 25 to 30 cm between the rows.

The demands on location and soil

A sunny to partially shaded location meets the requirements of the black salsify. In relation to the soil, the following properties should be found:

  • profound
  • loosened up
  • humus
  • wet
  • without stones
  • not condensed
  • ideal: sandy soils

Is care necessary here?

Salsify does not require any special care. It is enough to water them regularly (the soil should never dry out), sporadically with compost too fertilize and remove weeds. It is usually not attacked by diseases or pests.

When and how does the harvest take place?

If the salsify was sown in good time and its leaves wither in autumn, the time of harvest comes into focus. the harvest begins in October and can drag on through winter (high season) to spring. The roots are up to 35 cm long with a spade uncovered and taken from the earth.
