How much frost can Solanum tolerate?

How much frost your Solanum can withstand depends on its species. After all, the genus contains around 1400 different plant species. The popular climbing plant Solanum jasminoides, also known as summer jasmine, can withstand frost down to around - 2 ° C, but only for a very short time. One frost-free overwintering is therefore strongly recommended. Of the Gentian bush (bot. Solanum rantonnetii) even needs temperatures of at least + 7 ° C.

What to do with summer jasmine in winter?

Of the not hardy summer jasmine can be winterized in a cool and dark, for example in a basement room, as well as moderately warm and bright. A winter garden or a heated greenhouse is recommended here. A warm living room, on the other hand, is not suitable. Temperatures in the winter quarters shouldn't be above 15 ° C, but neither should they be below about 5 ° C.

When it is cool and dark over winter, your summer jasmine will probably shed its leaves, and sometimes develop horny shoots (long, pale and leafless shoots). It is completely normal. In the spring you can easily remove the unwanted shoots cut off. The new shoot is then strong and green again.

The essentials in brief:

  • Solanum is often not hardy
  • Frost-free overwintering recommended, temperature may vary depending on the species
  • Summer jasmine: winter cool and dark or moderately warm and light
  • Warm overwintering (well-heated living room) is usually not a good winter home
  • It is advisable to cut back before moving to winter quarters

Tips

Make sure that the summer jasmine is out of the reach of children even in winter quarters, because it is considered poisonous.
