Interesting facts about the growth of the hemp palm

Slowly to full height

On average, Trachycarpus fortunei grows about 15 cm per year. If you have your palm in the garden plant out, it will probably gain a little more, but it will grow more slowly in the bucket. In the bed, the maximum height is reached at 10-12 m. The straight trunk is then approx. 10 m high. In the bucket, the palm will stay well below it.

In old age, the trunk girth of a Chinese Hemp palm 70 to 110 cm and the trunk diameter about 25 to 35 cm. In old palms, however, the lower part of the trunk becomes thinner as fiber parts peel off.

"Adult" hemp palm blooms

When the hemp palm has reached about 1 m trunk height with its growth, it is no longer a young palm. This is roughly the time when it starts to bloom. The growth of the palm fronds has to slow down during the flowering period. If you want to encourage the growth of new fronds, you should therefore use the blossom cut off early.

Development from the middle

Every new palm leaf grows out of the heart of the palm. If you occasionally have a few yellow or brown palm fronds cut you should be careful not to damage the palm heart with the scissors. That could mean the final end for the palm tree. Also, a palm that has grown too large must not simply be cut.

Growth of the palm fronds

New palm fronds continuously sprout from the heart of the hemp palm. They grow up to a length of about 90 cm and a width of about 1.6 m. The crown of an adult hemp palm can be composed of up to 50 palm fronds. In between, however, some of the outer leaves dry up and are cut off.

Crucial growth factors

Trachycarpus fortunei does not really allow itself a real break in growth. Of course, it grows faster in summer than in winter. And an adult female palm a little slower than a male palm. But also location and care affect growth:

  • in the sun the palm grows faster, in the Penumbra slower
  • good watering in summer will accelerate growth
  • Regular repotting promotes growth of tub specimens
  • nitrogenous Fertilize is helpful, but not over-fertilization!

Tips

Even if Trachycarpus fortunei is hardy, you shouldn't be without the palm Winter protection outside in frost overwinter permit. Otherwise the palm heart will freeze to death and new growth will fail.
