If something is gnawing at the basil - here's what to do about it

The tender basil leaves are one of the favorite dishes of the ubiquitous snails. The insatiable pests eat the valuable herb plant bare to the skeleton within a short time. How to fight the pests:

  • collect the cold-hardened snails in the early morning hours
  • set up a snail fence and position beer traps within the area
  • Lay out walking barriers around the basil plants, like Grit(€ 49.99 at Amazon *) or sawdust
  • Sprinkle coffee grounds and ground coffee, as caffeine is toxic to slugs
  • pot and equip the balcony box with an electric snail fence

Combat sucking and stinging pests effectively

If the previously lush green basil leaves are covered with speckles and holes, sucking and stinging pests are up to mischief here. Mostly it is an infestation through Aphids, Bugs or To fly. The use of classic home remedies is mainly based on liquid solutions, which is not very beneficial for sensitive royal herbs. Experienced hobby gardeners therefore proceed as follows against the brood:

  • cut out all infected parts of the plant
  • burn the clippings or dispose of them in household waste
  • Rinse a strong plant upside down and place it in an airy place to dry it off quickly
  • Repeatedly pollinate an infected royal herb with primary rock flour
  • optionally apply pure charcoal ash with the powder sprayer
  • Incorporate rye seeds into the substrate
  • Set up adhesive boards against flying aphids and whiteflies

The control of aphids and ants always goes hand in hand. Both types of insect enter into a symbiotic relationship that leaves a basil by the wayside. Aphids excrete honeydew that ants cannot get enough of. If the crawling animals sense danger for the lice, they simply transport the honeydew source to the next plant in the garden. Soda soda scattered on the streets puts an end to the ghost.

Tips

The targeted use of beneficial insects is becoming increasingly popular in biological pest control. Specialists breed the larvae of Predatory mites or ladybirds and send them to you in special containers. Spread on the infested basil plants, the pests are history within a few days.
