Even if it takes some time before the branch structure is in place, the required space must be planned for when planting. How big the planting distance between two trees has to be also depends on the type of trellis chosen.

A distance of approx. 2 m required. Trellis fruit with a simple U-shape, on the other hand, can be planted closer together. Inquire at the nursery which recommendation for the purchased one Espalier fruit variety is applicable.

Distance to the support frame

Espalier fruit needs a framework to which its branches are tied. That is why it has to be planted close to it. But not too close. The roots need space to develop in all directions. The visible parts of the tree also need their freedom.

  • the branches become thicker over time
  • they need space without pressing against the scaffolding
  • air must also be able to circulate around the branches
  • a distance of about 20 cm is ideal

Distance to the house wall

It is not uncommon Espalier fruit on a house wall drawn. There, too, the tree is planted at some distance from the trellis. This in turn should itself with at least 10 cm from the wall. This allows air to circulate and leaves that are wet from rain dry out more quickly and easily.

Distance to the neighboring property

Espalier fruit is often planted near a neighboring property. Be it that there is no other space, or that Espalier fruit as a privacy screen should serve. The legislators of most federal states are gracious here and do not provide for any minimum distances to neighbors for espalier fruit.
