For some, dandelions are an annoying weed, for others a cure. The indestructible plant itself grows between concrete slabs and on walls and stretches its yellow head towards the sun. Dandelion tea and dandelion press juice are part of the range in every health food store, dandelion salad is a tasty side dish in selected restaurants. Even dandelion coffee is touted by naturopaths because of its health benefits. Could it be that dandelions are poisonous?

The common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) belongs to the sunflower family (Asteraceae) like the aster, the sunflower, the marigold and the daisy. The herbaceous plant contains white milky sap in all parts of the plant. Noticeable and a nuisance for all hobby gardeners is the fleshy taproot, which is up to one meter long. The dandelion flowers are bright yellow. With the seed formation, the well-known dandelions that are loved by children develop.

Taraxacum officinale is rich in vital substances, minerals and vitamins. It contains more vitamins A, C and E, magnesium, iron, potassium and calcium than lettuce. It is also rich in proteins and valuable beta carotene.
Possible confusion
The common dandelion can easily be confused with other Taraxacum varieties. The plants of this genus are very similar. Sometimes the only difference is the shape of the seeds.
Is dandelion poisonous?
It is easy for small children to put a dandelion flower or a leaf in their mouths. Concerned parents then wonder if there is any danger. It is true that the yellow flowering plant also contains oxalic acid and taraxacin in addition to many healthy ingredients. The toxic oxalic acid is mainly contained in the dandelion leaves. Taraxacin also works easypoisonous. It is mainly found in white milky juice.
Taraxicin can cause the following symptoms when the plant parts are consumed:
- diarrhea
- nausea
- Liver pain
- stomach pain
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- malaise
If you experience these symptoms, drink plenty of water.

Threats to animals?
When horses are allowed to go out to pasture again in spring, the vital substance-rich dandelion plants are waiting for them. These are irreplaceable for horses. They stimulate digestion and metabolism. However, the Taraxacum plants often only contain a few healthy bitter substances in heavily fertilized, nitrogen-containing meadows.
Dogs like to nibble on dandelion flowers and leaves. Rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters feed on the plant. There is no danger to these animals when they eat dandelions. On the contrary, they benefit from the diuretic, detoxifying effect and the high content of vitamins and minerals.
Note: In the Vogtland, the dandelion plants are also known as "hosnblaatle" because of their use as food for hares and rabbits.
Cat special case!
Unlike most other pets, cats are very sensitive to dandelions. Because dandelions are for them poisonous. However, it is hardly possible to protect free-roaming cats from contact with the plant. Rest assured that your outdoor cats are smart enough to withstand the dangers of the garden. Plant parts are more dangerous for house cats that long for the green stems. Do not give your house cat any part of the plant to eat and make sure that it always has enough cat grass available.
