What problems can arise?

Lettuce is a shallow root that is densely branched in the upper part of the soil. Usually the roots only reach up to 20 cm deep into the ground. For this reason, the salad relies on a regular supply of water from above.

If, for example, there is drought in summer and watering is forgotten, the lettuce begins to shoot. It develops a long stem on which flowers develop in an instant. If this is the case, the individual lettuce leaves become hard and bitter in taste. In addition, the nitrate content in the lettuce leaves rises sharply, which can also be dangerous for dogs.

What is important from the outset?

When planting the lettuce, value should be placed on suitable soil. The lettuce needs a well-drained soil that prevents excessive moisture from building up. Furthermore, the soil should be slightly loamy so that water can be retained.

Beware of burns and rot

All types of lettuce do not like it when their leaves are wetted with water and the risk of burns from sunlight increases. In principle, lettuce should no longer be poured from above with a watering can when it is ripe. Heads of lettuce in particular should be watered in the root area. The water can immediately reach the roots and the leaves do not rot from the moisture.

The thirst never goes away

Salad is the thirsty one among the vegetables. Independently of,when it was plantedand when hisSeason is, it must be watered regularly. Please note the following when pouring:

  • water regularly and evenly
  • preferably use tap water
  • Do not wet leaves with water
  • ideal time: in the morning (water on the leaves can dry quickly)

Tips & Tricks

You are welcome to add nettle tea to the pouring water. It fertilizes the soil for the lettuce in a natural and gentle way.
