Big cat's head: characteristics at a glance

The ancient pear variety Großer Katzenkopf (Syn.: Crown Prince Fredinand, ham pear, Winter butter pear) was already grown in Franconian tree nurseries in 1590, but is only left today occasionally widespread. Every two years she bears plenty of pears of considerable size.

  • Ripe for picking from mid-October; Ripe for consumption from December to January
  • Very large, spherical-top-shaped fruits
  • Thick, matt-glossy shell; yellowish in color, flamed brownish-red on the sunny side
  • many brown peel points and slight russeting
  • firm, juicy flesh with a sweet aroma; turns reddish in color when cooked
  • Boiled, dried and cider pear

I studied agricultural science in beautiful Weihenstephan. In addition to gardening (I mainly grow vegetables and herbs), my heart beats especially for the animal world. No matter if dog, guinea pig, hedgehog or bee - everyone should feel comfortable in my garden.
