Origin and history

The date wine tomato is a rich, old German variety and has been used by various non-profit organizations such as the ARCHE NOAH e. V. increased. The yellow ‘date wine’ was thus able to be preserved despite the introduction of hybrid seeds and new seed regulations and is enjoying growing popularity again.

Properties and taste of the yellow tomato variety ‘date wine’

The date wine tomato forms many small pear- to drop-shaped fruits in large clusters as early as mid-July. This pretty yellow tomato variety can be harvested until the first frost and even unripe fruits ripen very well on the windowsill. The yellow pears have an aromatic, sweet and mild taste and are therefore wonderful snack tomatoes for young and old. The yellow date wine tomato is a solid seed variety, from which you can harvest seeds yourself in late summer and sow them again the next year.

Planting and maintaining ‘date wine’: One should pay attention to this

The ‘Dattelwein’ is extremely robust and is therefore ideally suited for balconies and outdoors. When planting, fill the pot or the planting hole with special tomato soil, such as our Plantura Organic tomato & vegetable soil. This 100% peat-free substrate provides your young plants with the nutrients they need for the healthy growth of roots and fruits.

The date wine tomato does not necessarily have to be exhausted, but can be raised with three to four shoots if there is less space.

The richly bearing variety needs a lot of nutrients over the season. Add the liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water about once a week and enjoy the many fruits on your date wine tomato. The plant grows up to two meters high and therefore needs a rod or cord as a support both in the pot and in the bed.

Harvest and use date wine tomatoes

The date wine tomato is particularly suitable as a snack tomato, fresh straight from the bush into the mouth. Should you ever harvest too many of the aromatic fruits, they can be cut in half and dried in the oven over low heat. So you can still enjoy your summer fruits even in the cold season.
