Origin and history

‘Auriga’ is one of the rare German varieties and originated in the former GDR. It originally comes from Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt, it was bred by Dr. Martin Stein. It came on the market in 1980 and is still an integral part of the orange tomato varieties.

Properties and taste of the Auriga tomato

The plants of the ‘Auriga’ variety reach a stature height of around 160 centimeters, they rarely grow larger. The round, deep orange fruits hang in branched panicles. From the end of July, Auriga produces juicy, aromatic tomatoes with a sweet, fruity taste. The low acid content is also good for those with sensitive stomachs. It is one of the seed-resistant varieties and can therefore be grown from your own seeds again and again.

Growing the tomato variety ‘Auriga’: Tips for outdoors and in pots

Auriga is an ideal Tomato for outdoors, because it is burst-resistant and not very susceptible to fungal diseases. Even without rain protection, it delivers high yields and hardly requires any maintenance. She feels just as comfortable in a large pot as she does in a bed and gets along very well there even in less protected locations.
At planting time, fill the pot with a soil specially formulated for tomatoes, like ours Plantura organic tomato & vegetable soil. The nutrients it contains form the basis for good root growth, lively soil life and, ultimately, a good harvest. The young plants of the Auriga should be set deep in the earth and supported with a rod made of metal or wood.

Caring for auriga tomato

After three weeks at the latest, the first fertilization should take place, because now the plants have grown well and have formed many new roots. Our Plantura organic tomato fertilizer releases its nutrients gently and long-term, it can even be added to the planting hole. The dosage for tomatoes is around 70 to 150 grams per square meter. After about two months, the second fertilization is carried out with 50 to 80 grams per plant. During the season, you should be on the proper watering and mulching pay attention to save water and maintain soil life.

Harvest and use Auriga tomatoes

From the end of July the time has come: the first strong orange fruits are ripe and want to be picked. The Auriga tastes best straight from the bush, when it is still sun-warm and juicy. It sets colorful accents in salads and it is also a real delicacy fresh on bread. Of course, it can also be processed and dried or pickled.
