Origin and history

The tomato Amethyst Jewelˈ was bred by Brad Gates at Wild Boar Farms in California and was launched as a new tomato variety in 2013. Incidentally, this also comes from the cradle of the American breeder

Dark Galaxy Tomato. The unusual color combination and the good taste of the "Amethyst Jewel" tomato quickly gained worldwide popularity with tomato lovers.

Properties and taste of the tomato ‘Amethyst Jewel‘

The plants of the "Amethyst Jewel" tomato grow to a height of two meters and more, they grow indefinitely, that is, they continue to grow throughout the season. This stake tomato produces only a few side shoots and quickly elongates. The fruits are flat-round, slightly ribbed and pink-red in color, with blue-violet to black shoulders. The dark color is triggered by sunlight and the darker the color, the stronger the solar radiation. The tomatoes, which ripen from mid-August, weigh between 100 and 300 grams and vary in size. The taste of the high-yielding ˈAmethyst Jewelˈ tomatoes is sweet and very fruity, with little acidity. You can get fresh ones every year from the brightly colored, seed-solid beefsteak tomato Obtain tomato seeds yourself.

Special features when growing and caring for beefsteak tomatoes

The ‘Amethyst Jewel’ tomato, like many beefsteak tomatoes, needs extremely warmth and is sensitive to bad weather. It should therefore have a place in the greenhouse, polytunnels, on the balcony or in the protected open field under a rain cover. The young plants grown from February / March can be planted in the greenhouse at the beginning of May, after the ice saints in mid-May in the protected open ground or in pots.

First dig a deep planting hole or fill a planter with a capacity of at least 20 liters halfway with nutrient-rich potting soil. Our Plantura organic tomato & vegetable soil is ideal for this. The climate-damaging degraded peat contained in commercially available potting soil has been replaced in all of our potting soil by a high compost content, which takes over the storage of water. The nutrients already contained in it supply young tomato plants for the first few weeks after planting.

The young plants are placed deep in the ground so that about half to a third of the plant is still visible. Remove the bottom leaves that would now be below the surface of the earth. Then lightly press the substrate around the plant. Then water vigorously and make sure to support the ˈAmethyst Jewelˈ tomato with a stick.

In June, the now well-grown tomato plant begins to form the first flowers and then fruits. During this time, the nutrient requirement of the heavy eater increases and the first fertilization is due to prevent deficiency symptoms. An organic liquid fertilizer like ours Plantura organic tomato & vegetable fertilizer makes the nutrient supply immensely easier not only for tomatoes in pots, but also in the greenhouse. The organic liquid fertilizer is applied together with the irrigation water about once a week and thus quickly reaches the roots of the tomato plants.

Although the "Amethyst Jewel" tomato forms only a few side shoots, these should still be checked and removed regularly. The plant can also be grown with two shoots by leaving another deep-seated side shoot next to the main shoot. More tips on Skinning tomatoes can be found in our special article.

tip: Water the ˈAmethyst Jewelˈ tomato sparingly as soon as the fruits turn pink, as the large fruits can easily burst if you give too much water.

Amethyst Jewel: Harvesting and Using the Tomato

From mid-August the first brightly colored tomatoes are ripe and waiting to be harvested. ˈAmethyst Jewelˈ tomatoes are suitable for all uses, from fresh on bread to tomato soup or as a salad. The unusual color is of course best shown when it is freshly cut.
