Kale is a typical dish on cold winter days. The different varieties differ in many ways, such as taste, color and resistance to sub-zero temperatures. You can order seeds for growing kale either online from us or at a garden center near you.

We have described some well-known and proven winter cabbage varieties for you in more detail below:

  • Half-height green curl: Medium high and extremely hardy; Tried and tested variety with finely curled foliage.
  • Lark tongues: Small growing and extremely hardy variety with dainty and short leaves; particularly high quality taste; traditional variety; is unfortunately hardly to be found in markets anymore.
  • Redbor F1: Variety with high decorative value; very finely curled leaves; growing to half height; the foliage shines discreetly reddish and bluish with pinkish reddish leaf veins; reasonably good yield; unique in optics; Recommendation for cultivation on the balcony or terrace.
  • East Frisian palm: Very fast growing variety; lower leaves are used for animal feeding; the upper young leaf shoots find their place in the kitchen.
  • Holter palm: Coarsely curled foliage; very rapid growth.
  • Brown cabbage Red kale: Modern variety with red-brownish foliage; is highly valued due to the numerous ingredients it contains (flavonoids).
  • Vitessa: Extremely compact variety; higher sugar content, therefore harvesting is often done earlier; does not tolerate frost very well.
  • Winter bor: Grows to about medium height; strongly curled, green to bluish foliage; extremely frost-resistant.

I have a degree in industrial engineering, but have always been an enthusiastic hobby gardener at heart. I have been growing fruit and vegetables in my own garden for over ten years, and my passion is primarily for rare and special varieties.
