Bow hemp is clearly one of the kind of plants that can be propagated endlessly. In particular of the two popular types Sansevieria trifasciata and Sansevieria cylindrica you can never really have enough. The plants do not grow very quickly, but they tirelessly form new runners with young daughter rosettes by themselves. You can also grow many small plants from the leaves without any problems.

Propagate bow hemp by cuttings

The bow hemp can be propagated well by leaf cuttings. To do this, cut off a leaf just above the ground. It is best to choose a leaf that is still small so that the cutting is not too big. You can also divide long leaves into several parts, because the individual cuttings only need to be ten to fifteen centimeters long. Let the interfaces dry a little. Now you can stick about a third of the leaves or leaf parts each into the prepared substrate.

With parts of the leaf, make sure that you insert them into the soil the right way round. Roots only grow if they are allowed to continue to grow in their original direction of growth. The cuttings take a long time to develop and it can even take a few months before the small plants show. Put the planter in a warm place and keep it damp, but not wet.

Summary: Propagate bow hemp by leaf cuttings:

  • Cut off the small leaf just above the ground
  • Cut into 10-15 cm long pieces of leaf
  • Place one third of the leaf cuttings in the substrate in the direction of growth
  • Place the planter in a warm place and keep it moist

The disadvantage of leaf cuttings is that the young plants can deviate from the cultivated form of their mother plant. This is at Sansevieria trifasciata ˈLaurentiiˈ the case. It can happen that the plants develop back to their original form in this way and lose the yellow leaf edge in the process.

When you take your plant out of the pot, you will notice that it is usually no longer just one plant. The bow hemp has formed runners over time, the daughter rosettes of which you can now detach. Untangle the intertwined roots and carefully separate the plants. You can cut the young plants close to the mother plant with a sharp and clean knife. Now you have one or more young plants that you can potted separately.
