Yucca palm with yellow leaves: the causes

Yellow leaves are quite common on yucca palms and can have various causes, for example:

  • Waterlogging / excessive humidity
  • Lack of water
  • Too little light
  • sunburn
  • Natural fall off as the trunk grows

In particular, increased watering often leads to problems with yucca palms, since the agave family (Agavoideae) are adapted to very dry climates in their natural range.

Yucca palm with yellow leaves: the countermeasures

First of all, it must be clarified which of the above-mentioned causes is responsible for the discoloration of the leaves. If you water too much, you should reduce the amount and frequency of water and always pour off the water in the saucer. If you notice that the leaves are only turning yellow on one side of the yucca palm, the light intensity is probably not sufficient at this point. In this case, find another location for your plant so that it receives even and sufficient light. If, on the other hand, the leaves are sunburned, you should look for a place where the plant is less exposed to direct sunlight.

Yucca palm is losing its leaves: what to do?

If your yucca begins to lose more and more leaves, this can be due to both care errors (as mentioned above) and external diseases. The only countermeasure that usually helps is to adjust the maintenance for known errors. In an emergency, for example if lazy and soft spots appear, the affected parts of the plant should be completely disposed of.

Yucca palm: leaves have brown tips

In principle, brown leaf tips on the yucca palm can also be caused by too much water - but mostly the opposite is to blame. Especially in winter there are many palm lilies near the heater and suffer from the very dry and hot air. Sunburn can also manifest itself on the basis of the dark leaf tips. Therefore, try to ensure a little air movement in the room, prevent excessive solar radiation at the window and slightly humidify the air in winter.

Yucca palm: the most common diseases and pests

In addition to the incorrect handling of the yucca palm with regard to watering and location, diseases and pests can also occur that cause problems for the plant. We introduce some:

  • Root rot: Occurs as a result of waterlogging and in the long run leads to the death of the plant. This can be remedied by repotting and reducing watering.
  • mildew: Fungal disease that manifests itself as a white, furry coating on the leaves. A reduction in humidity prevents infestation.
  • Spider mites: Small white animals that feel comfortable in very dry air. In the event of an infestation, increase the humidity by spraying moderately with water.
  • Lice: here are mainly sheet- and Scale insects to name that feed on the plant. Our is recommended for successful and biological control Plantura organic pest-free neem. The spray is obtained from the seeds of the neem tree and effectively combats aphids and mealybugs.
