Origin and history of the apple
The variety ‘Red Jonaprince’, also known under the name ‘Red Prince’, is actually a mutant of the well-known variety ‘Jonagold’. In the nineties the Princen brothers from the Netherlands succeeded in breeding this new variety. The biggest difference to the ‘Jonagold’ variety is the intense red color of the apples. In Germany today this variety is mainly grown in the north, together with the varieties ‘Braeburn’, ‘Elstar' and 'Jonagored‘.
Properties and taste of ‘Red Jonaprince’
The apples are immediately noticeable because of their deep red color, which can be seen from the tree early on. The apples are medium-sized, round and extremely tasty. Their taste hardly differs from that of the ‘Jonagold’ apple variety. The bite into a ‘Red Jonaprince’ really cracks and is extremely refreshing. The apples are very juicy and have a sweet and sour taste.
Special features in cultivation
Young trees of the apple variety ‘Red Jonaprince’ grow very strongly at the beginning. With increasing age, however, the growth levels off to a medium level. To fertilize the flower, apple trees of other varieties are necessary in the area, as the variety is self-sterile.

Harvest time and use of ‘Red Jonaprince’
‘Red Jonaprince’ is an exceptionally high-yielding variety. The tree will surprise you every year with an exuberant harvest. The fruits ripen from around mid-September, in some places not until the beginning of October. Due to their low pressure sensitivity, they can be stored very easily. The apples are wonderful table apples, but they are also suitable for making desserts or cakes.
