Cutting hybrid tea roses: the right approach

Every time you cut a rose, you should follow a few basic rules. Be sure to use sharp secateurs so that the cut is as smooth as possible. Also, always cut about five millimeters above an outward-facing bud. The cut surface should be sloping so that the rainwater can run off.

Correctly cut hybrid tea roses are characterized by the formation of long, straight flower stalks. When doing the annual basic pruning, it is best to start by removing extreme forks of branches, weak, dead and overly dense shoots. All strong shoots can then be cut back to five eyes and all weaker shoots to three eyes. A branch on which the rose blooms then sprouts from each of these buds. So don't leave too many shoots standing. With a slow-growing variety, three to four strong shoots are sufficient. Five to six shoots should remain on fast-growing varieties. Each year you can also cut off a leading shoot close to the ground to stimulate regeneration with new shoots from the base.
