Like so many plants, he also has liguster (Ligustrum) the ability to reproduce without seeds. And it's actually pretty easy. Do you enjoy pulling cuttings, cuttings and offshoots, then you have come to the right place with this plant.

If you want to surround your entire garden with privet, it can quickly turn into money. Fortunately, there is also the quick and easy method of propagation at home in your own garden. Since privet grows rapidly, this is an ideal option. However, an opaque hedge will take time. Alternatively, you can also plant parts of the hedge with purchased specimens and fill less important places with your own pupils.

Propagate privet using cuttings

The privet can be propagated quickly using cuttings. To do this, cut off unwooded young shoots about 15 to 20 centimeters in length in the spring. You should now remove all leaves from the lower half of the cutting. With this part you then stick the shoot into loose soil. Either do this directly in the field or you put it in a pot. The cutting should be at least halfway underground. With enough water, the cutting will now quickly grow into a young plant. To encourage branching, you can remove the very front part of the tip. vegetative reproduction about cuttings, see this article.

Propagate privet over cuttings

You can also pull cuttings out of privet. For this, however, one does not use young shoots, but branches that are already lignified. That is why the right time for this was only in late August. Other than that, the process is similar to that for cuttings. Cut off a six-inch cuttings and remove any excess leaves. Now insert the wood about halfway into the earth and press it down lightly. Now all you have to do is water regularly and wait for the plant to develop.

The right time for this measure is in summer. However, the mother plant must not be pruned too well for offshoots or subsidence. It needs at least one branch long enough to be bent all the way to the ground. If you have such a plant, you can easily scratch the branch with a sharp and clean knife in the places where it will later touch the ground. Then dig a small hollow in the ground. Instead of planting the cuttings in the ground, you can do this directly in the pot. Simply place a sufficiently large pot with loose soil under the branch. Once you have dug the hollow, place the branch with the incised areas in it and cover it with earth. The tip of the shoot still peeks out at the front. So that the branch does not rise again, but can take root in peace, you can put a sufficiently heavy stone on the pile of earth with the branch below. Once the offshoot has grown, you can separate the connection to the mother plant.

Summary Privet Propagate:

  • Propagation via cuttings is particularly quick and easy and takes place in spring with the help of unwooded shoots
  • Timber cuttings are only cut in late August, as lignified branches are required for this
  • For cuttings or sinkers, bend a sufficiently long shoot to the ground or to a suitable pot and "plant" it, so to speak
