Roses (pink) are always a very special eye-catcher in the garden. And especially specimens of the hybrid tea group usually have large and particularly beautifully shaped flowers in bright colors. They are the result of cross-breeding between tea and remontant roses that bloom more often. Unfortunately, in the meantime the plant breeders have probably forgotten that appearance and permanent bloom are not everything. The first attempts at crossing were therefore extremely susceptible to disease and lacked winter hardiness. Nowadays, however, there are innumerable hybrid tea varieties that are both pretty to look at and also shine with other properties, such as good leaf health.

In this article, we have compiled the most important properties of hybrid tea roses for you and then introduce you to some of the most popular hybrid tea varieties.

Hybrid tea: characteristics and growth habit

Hybrid tea roses are the oldest class of modern roses. They were created in the 19th Century through the crossing of Chinese tea roses and European remontant roses, which is why they are often referred to as tea hybrids. In addition to positive properties such as an expanded color range, new fragrances and a longer bloom, the However, the introduction of the Chinese roses also has negative properties such as the increased susceptibility to rose diseases - for example for Soot (Diplocarpon rosae) or Powdery mildew (Erysiphales) - and the lack of winter hardiness in the breeding line of modern varieties. All rose varieties that existed before the introduction of the hybrid tea are therefore called "old roses" today.

From the efforts of the plant breeders, however, some wonderful varieties with predominantly positive properties have emerged in the decades that followed. These hybrid tea roses carry their double and often fragrant flowers individually on long stems. In addition, the large flowers are usually characterized by a particularly elegant shape. Hybrid teas look best when they are planted in groups in the garden or combined with delicate summer flowers, grasses or perennials.
