Passion flowers (Passiflora) can sometimes develop long tendrils. A cut back from time to time is definitely appropriate. We have put together for you the best way to do this.

Passion flowers are very easy on pruning and therefore don't mind a proper pruning. Since they are distinct climbing plants and can become very large, a cut can even be mandatory - at the latest when the question of winter quarters arises.

When to cut passionflower?

In principle, you should cut your passion flower in spring before it starts growing again. In the case of planted specimens whose aboveground biomass has frozen off over the winter, you can now remove the dead plant parts. If the above-ground parts have survived or if the passion flower has been overwintered in the house, pruning is now also an option.

However, you can also do the pruning in the autumn before moving to the winter quarters. At this point in time the growing season is largely over and a proper cut back will certainly make it easier for you to find a suitable wintering place.

How much to cut passion flowers and how much?

Since passion flowers only bloom on young and lignified shoots, you should cut back the older passion flower shoots. In addition, cutting back leads to more branches, which is definitely desirable. The shoots can be cut back to up to 15 cm - but in such a way that a few eyes remain. More than five eyes are not necessary. From these the young shoots then sprout fresh again in spring. Make sure to use a clean and sharp tool such as a knife or secateurs when pruning to avoid the transmission of diseases.
