"Potting soil? There can't be any big differences? ”And the inexpensive entry-level potting soil ends up in the shopping cart. After all, the high price of premium potting soil is completely overpriced and anyway the same thing is contained in all potting soil, right? But when you choose cheap potting soil, you save at the wrong end. Because the differences between different potting soil are actually enormous and are ultimately reflected in the condition of the plants. And if these care because of the wrong soil selection and have to be nursed with a lot of time and additional resources, you get annoyed. We explain to you why it is worth buying high-quality potting soil.

Potting soil: If you buy cheap, you buy twice

This also applies to potting soil. The decisive factor that separates the wheat from the chaff in potting soil is the composition and quality of the additional ingredients. Inexpensive products like to save here: The fertilizer they contain is often not sufficient or even for the first few days has the wrong nutrient distribution - large pieces of wood or clods of earth even cause poor soil structure. More expensive soils, on the other hand, often rely on quality instead of quantity. The expensive depot fertilizers contained under certain circumstances can supply the plants continuously for several months without causing deficiency symptoms.

In the case of substrates from the higher price segment, you can also rely on the information relating to the composition and nutrient content. This brings security and allows any additional fertilization that may be required to be planned more reliably. Furthermore, the soil structure of the substrate is improved by adding clay: This not only achieves the right consistency, but also the buffer capacity of the earth - fluctuations in the pH value due to fertilizer and irrigation water can be better absorbed thanks to the clay content, so that acidification is less likely to occur can.

The right soil for the right plant

But not only quality and composition are important points when choosing the right potting soil. Inexpensive products often pretend to be "universal" potting soil, which apparently offers a perfect solution for all plants.
