Aglaonema species: how many are there?

The plant genus belonging to the arum family Aglaonema includes 22 different types. They differ mainly in the occurrence, size and pattern of the leaves, whereby the varieties usually come in different colors. The piston thread Aglaonema pictum occurs naturally on Sumatra and Borneo. There it grows on the ground as an upright shrub and forms decorative, 10-20 cm long leaves. The dark green leaves have a light, greenish variegation.

  • Aglaonema pictum "Tricolor": This is probably the best-known variety of this piston thread type. Silvery-white and light green spots litter the dark green leaves, creating a camouflage-like camouflage pattern.
  • Aglaonema pictum "Bicolor": As you can already guess from the name, this variety looks similar to ‘Tricolor’, although the pattern consists of only two colors.

Aglaonema commutatum

The piston thread native to the Philippines Aglaonema commutatum is available as a houseplant in numerous varieties. The up to 50 cm high plant forms many green leaves with gray spots in nature. This species needs a little more light for cob thread conditions, so it should not be too far from the nearest window.

  • Aglaonema commutatum"Red Zircon": The leaves of this variety are green on the edge and adorned with a pink, mottled pattern in the center.
  • Aglaonema commutatum"Silver Bay": In the ‘Silver Bay’ piston thread, the green leaves in the middle are colored silver. Outwardly, the silver runs into the green base color.
  • Aglaonema commutatum'Maria': The ‘Maria’ variety has dark green leaves with a stripe-like, silver-colored pattern. This variety gets by with a little less light than the species.
  • Aglaonema commutatum‘Albovariegata’: In this variety, the stems and trunk of the plant are colored white.
  • Aglaonema commutatum "Red Star": The red leaves with the green edge make this variety a very special eye-catcher.

Aglaonema crispum

The so-called drawn piston thread is also under the name Aglaonema roebelinii known. It forms quite large leaves about 30 cm long and in nature becomes a large shrub over a meter in size. The leaves are light silver and streaked with green patterns. This type is also suitable for particularly dark corners in the room.

  • Aglaonema crispum‘Deborah’: The leaves of this variety are almost whitish light green, with the leaf veins appearing drawn in a dark green.

Aglaonmea nitidum

Aglaonema nitidum grows quite slowly, but can reach heights of 90 cm after a while. It occurs in Borneo, Sumatra and Burma.

  • Aglaonema nitidum"Cortisii": The green leaves of this variety have a silver border.
  • Aglaonema nitidum'Super Green': Here the leaves have no markings at all, but are monochrome, shiny green in color.
  • Aglaonema nitidum"Ernesto's Favorite": The leaves of this variety are green and have a broad, silver-colored stripe on the central rib.

Aglaonema costatum

This species is quite short and has many leaves that are close together. The leaves are green with a white central rib. The light requirement is quite low, so that the species is also suitable for slightly darker areas in the room.

  • Aglaonema costatum‘Foxii’: In this variety of cob thread, the dark green leaves are provided with a light central rib and white speckles.

Aglaonema modestum

In contrast to the other types it forms Aglaonema modestum no patterned leaves, but is naturally solid green. A place with little light is absolutely sufficient for the glossy green leaves to develop magnificently. Too much light or even direct sunlight has a negative effect on the leaf color.
