eat pomegranate

The bright red to pink fruit of the pomegranate originally comes from western and central Asia. Over time, however, the Mediterranean region has also developed as a cultivation area for the pomegranate tree. Today the pomegranate is eaten almost worldwide. Especially at the start of the pomegranate season in early autumn, the question of cutting and opening the fruit arises. How do you cut it open without getting full of pomegranate juice? Below you will find how to get the healthy seeds out of the pomegranate – without making a mess when opening.

Preparing to open the pomegranate

First of all, it is advisable to use an appropriate pad and a kitchen apron. Because the pomegranate juice is difficult to remove from textiles. A sharp (but not too large) knife is also a prerequisite for successfully opening the fruit.

Slice and deseed the pomegranate properly
This is what a properly sliced pomegranate looks like. The gutting is then very easy.

Before you start cutting, you should hold the pomegranate securely in your hand. This prevents you from injuring yourself with the knife. Slightly older pomegranates sometimes have a very hard skin that even sharp knives can slip off more easily, so be careful when cutting.

Cut, open & core pomegranate: Instructions

  1. Circular cut to remove the upper part
Start cutting in the upper part. The depth of the incision should be around 5mm so that the small fruit chambers are not punctured. While cutting, turn the fruit piece by piece with the other hand. You can then carefully lift off the "lid" of the pomegranate.
  2. Make side cuts on the pomegranate
Now look for the dividing lines (whitish mesocarp) of the individual segments. Most pomegranates have 4 to 6 fruit segments. A cut is now made along the separating layers to the underside of the fruit. This is repeated for each of the segments.
  3. Opening the pomegranate
Now you can carefully spread the fruit and thus open it. Simply remove the white streak in the middle of the fruit with your fingers.
  4. Deseed the pomegranate
The beautiful, garnet-red, sliced fruit is ready before your eyes. The fruit chambers can be easily removed with your finger or a small spoon, freeing the pomegranate seeds.

alternative method: You can also fill the sink with water. The individual pomegranate seeds are then stripped off under water. This avoids the unpleasant splashes of pomegranate juice.

Use pomegranate

This trick allows you to easily cut and open the pomegranate. What you then do with the healthy fruit is entirely up to you. Pomegranate seeds can be integrated into all kinds of dishes. For breakfast, you can eat the pomegranate seeds in muesli or yoghurt, for example. And the seeds are also a crunchy, fruity addition to salads. In southern Europe and the Near and Middle East, pomegranate juice and pomegranate syrup are also very popular. Pomegranate syrup is also great for refining salad dressings and also for sandwiches, wraps and falafel. As you can see, the recipes with pomegranate as a flavor component are diverse.

In addition, the pomegranate is very healthy. It is rich in the mineral potassium, for example, and iron and B vitamins are also found in the fruit. In terms of calories, there is no need to be afraid of pomegranates either: there are around 83 kilocalories (kcal) per 100 grams.

So the pomegranate is definitely an asset in the kitchen and now you also know how to easily cut and open it.

Did you know that pomegranates can also be cultivated in our latitudes? The pomegranate cuts a fine figure in a pot on the terrace or in the conservatory. In this article we will introduce you to more Fruits for growing in pots in front.
