columbines (aquilegia) have fallen into disrepute as poisonous on many websites. Anyone who has a columbine in their garden knows that the robust plant reproduces in large numbers, but does not appear to be a poisonous plant. So what's with the rumours?

Poisonous Columbine?

Hildegard von Bingen already used columbine as a tincture to cure fever. However, plants that can heal are often also poisonous. The medicinally effective ingredients of the plants help in small doses against all kinds of ailments. In higher doses, however, they can also cause us humans considerable harm. However, no major dangers emanate from the columbine. Symptoms of poisoning can occur, but these also subside quickly.

Is columbine poisonous to humans?

Columbine is slightly poisonous to humans. It contains the substance magnoflorin and a glycoside that produces hydrocyanic acid. Consumption is therefore not advisable, as shortness of breath, heart problems and cramps could result. Fortunately, both substances in the columbine are not in very high doses, so the symptoms subside quickly. The toxins are even destroyed by drying or heating the parts of the plant. However, caution is advised when pruning or weeding sensitive people, because escaping juices can lead to unsightly skin irritation in some.

Is columbine poisonous to cats and the like?

Basically all parts of the columbine are poisonous, especially the seeds. Luckily, there is little reason to worry. The plants have a bitter taste. Cats and dogs will therefore hardly think of eating columbine leaves, which are really no pleasure. However, make sure that rabbits, guinea pigs and the like cannot get close to the columbine. The smaller the animal, the less poison is enough to cause serious damage.

Treat Columbine Poisoning

Poisoning caused by columbine is extremely unlikely. The plant does not taste good, so neither children nor pets will consume large amounts of it. Since columbines are only slightly toxic to humans and larger animals such as dogs and cats, any symptoms usually subside quickly. For small animals, however, you should contact your vet immediately to be on the safe side.

notice: If large amounts of leaves or seeds have been consumed by children, you should consult a doctor immediately in any case.
