Water the bougainvillea properly

Optimum watering of a bougainvillea is essential for growth during the summer and should not be neglected. Always keep the substrate slightly moist so that the soil never dries out completely. But don't worry: if you forget to water for a short time or if nobody is around while you're on vacation, the plant won't die right away. Loss of leaves should still be expected if the drought persists. Just like a lack of water, you should also avoid waterlogging in tropical plants to prevent root rot. During the winter, you should definitely limit watering to a minimum, otherwise it could damage the plant.

Pruning bougainvillea: When is the best time to prune?

The first cut of the year should always be made immediately after wintering, when the bougainvillea has not yet sprouted. In the course of the year, further light pruning work can be carried out in order to increase the willingness to flower. A last cut before hibernation in autumn is also common to prepare the plant for the cold season.

Cutting bougainvillea: instructions on how to proceed

When pruning bougainvillea throughout the year, do the following:

  1. In early spring, prune last year's leaves and shoots to allow the bougainvillea to continue branching. Make sure that you don't cut off the entire branch, but always leave a third of the length. The colorful flowers of the exotic always grow on the new shoots of the plant, so the first cut is particularly important.
  2. In the course of the summer, shoots with faded and dried bracts should be cut off so that new branches can grow again. With this method, the flowering can be extended in the summer and you can sometimes look forward to the blossoms well into the autumn.
  3. A final cut should be made on the plant in autumn so that it can overwinter without problems. Cut the bougainvillea a little more compactly so that it doesn't take up too much space in the winter quarters.
