Dry hydrangeas properly
It is important that the flowers are harvested in full bloom and before they wither. Keep in mind that the shoot from which you harvest the flower will probably not grow a flower the following year. The lower you cut the shoot, the less likely it will flower next year. In the next paragraphs you will find three different tips on how best to dry hydrangea flowers from your own garden.
Method 1: Let hydrangeas die of thirst
The flowers of the hydrangea can be dried simply by dehydrating them and can thus be preserved forever. Initially, the cut flower is placed in a vase with water, but after that it is no longer cared for. The flowers dry up and retain their stable rounded shape. The disadvantage of this form of drying is that the flowers lose their color and consequently turn brown.
Method 2: Air dry hydrangeas
Even if the flowers have already lost their color on the plant and the process of fading is in full swing, they can still be saved for life afterwards. The shoots are cut off and the leaves removed. The flowers are then hung upside down to air dry in as dry a place as possible. Unfortunately, even with this method, the buds lose a large part of their strong colors.
Method 3: drying hydrangeas with glycerin
If you want to fully preserve the color of the hydrangea flowers, the following method is for you. If the hydrangea blossoms are watered with a glycerin solution after harvesting, this ensures that the blossoms retain their color during the drying process and are colorful as decoration for up to three more years shine. The glycerin solution should be two parts water and one part glycerin alcohol.
