The Mother Apple: Origin & Characteristics

The mother apple (syn.: Lavanthaler banana apple (Austria), The Mother, American Mother) originally comes from the USA and was first described in Germany in 1882.

  • ripe for picking in October; Ripeness for consumption from October to December
  • Medium-sized, round to tall fruits
  • Slightly greasy, greenish-yellow skin
  • orange-red marbled-washed out when fully ripe
  • Juicy, crunchy flesh, slightly sour and strong in spice
  • Late budding, therefore low risk of frost
  • Low sensitivity to scab

I studied agricultural sciences in beautiful Weihenstephan. In addition to gardening (I mainly grow vegetables and herbs), my heart also beats for the animal world. It doesn't matter whether it's a dog, guinea pig, hedgehog or bee - everyone should feel comfortable in my garden.
