Forsythia (Forsythia) welcome spring with their bright yellow flowers. You have no special requirements in terms of soil and location. They can also be easily propagated with cuttings or offshoots.
In a nutshell
- Cut cuttings in winter or summer
- Propagation with offshoots takes place after flowering
- after approx. Transplant a year old forsythia to the designated place
Cuttings
The ideal time to cut cuttings is December and January. This way, the cuttings can take root by May and sprout again in the blissful month. If you missed this point in time, you can still multiply your forsythia in July.
Cut
Forsythia cuttings are cut from annual shoots. You recognize these:
- olive green bark
- missing branches
Since long straight shoots are best for propagating the forsythia, look for them and cut them off at the point of attachment with secateurs. When making your selection, be careful not to disfigure the crown.
Prepare
In the second step you shorten the cut shoots to the optimal cutting length. Proceed as follows:
- Cut off the tip of the shoots by making a straight cut above the last pair of buds
- Make the second oblique cut below a pair of buds
- Cutting length: about 20 centimeters (= length of the secateurs)
- for later pruning (after flowering): remove leaves
Note: With the straight resp. oblique cut at the lower end of the cutting mark the direction of growth.
Put
You have different options when placing the cuttings. If the weather permits, you can set the cuttings directly into the ground. However, you should only do this if it is not frozen or frozen. no more ground frost is to be expected. Alternatively, you can put the forsythia offspring in small pots. The third possibility is a short storage of the shoot pieces in order to successfully multiply the forsythia. To do this, wrap them in a box with damp sand.
Cuttings in the garden
So that the cuttings can take root more easily, you should loosen up a piece of soil in the garden. It is important that the soil for the propagation of the forsythia is humus-rich and evenly moist. The location should be slightly shady so that the young forsythia do not dry out, especially during the time they are taking root. Insert the timbers into the ground as follows:
- Insert cuttings in the direction of growth (sloping end is at the bottom)
- Insertion depth: only the top pair of buds look out
- Distance: about 30 centimeters
- stuck in staggered rows if there are several rows
Note: After a year, the cuttings will have grown into young forsythia bushes that you can move to the designated place in the sun.
Cuttings in the pot
For propagation in the pot, fill it with growing medium. Put the cuttings in a circle in the direction of growth. The distance between the cuttings should be about three centimeters. As in the field, the cutting only looks out of the ground two fingers. Then water the forsythia offspring well and place the pot in a bright place without direct sunlight. This is how the forsythia can easily be propagated in the pot.
Offshoot
Since forsythia shoots quickly form roots when they come into contact with the ground, the shrubs are also suitable for propagation with cuttings (sinkers). Since the forsythia roots best at a soil temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, you should only use this form of propagation after flowering. Proceed as follows:
- pull the flexible shoot close to the ground to the ground on a trial basis
- Mark the point in contact with the ground
- Remove the bark at the marked area (a few centimeters long)
- Pull the branch to the ground
- anchor with wire pegs and cover with earth
- Tie the tip of the shoot to a wooden stick (looks up) and water it lightly
After about a year, the offshoot has developed enough roots of its own so that it can take care of itself. Now you can cut the connection to the mother plant and plant the young shrub in the desired location in the garden. This is how you can easily and healthily multiply your forsythia.
frequently asked Questions
Yes, that is possible. However, they are only allowed outside when frosts are no longer to be expected. You should therefore wait until mid-May to put it out.
In the pot as in the garden, you should make sure that the cuttings are constantly supplied with water. Therefore leave the substrate or Never dry out the soil completely, but keep the soil evenly moist in order for the forsythia to multiply optimally.
A small channel is not absolutely necessary, but it doesn't do any harm either. Since the forsythia roots well in the ground, it is sufficient if the channel is only a few centimeters deep.
