Flowering time: when does the rhododendron bloom?

When it comes to rhododendron blooms, most hobby gardeners think of pink or white blooming varieties in May. Yet these fascinating heather plants have so much more to offer. Their sizes vary between flat carpets and meter-high bushes, and with a skilful selection of varieties, the flowering time extends almost from March to October. When which rhododendron is blooming, we have therefore listed it once in detail.

The rhododendrons of the first season include the very early varieties, which delight us with their bright colors at the start of the season. When the first flowers on the rhododendron open depends heavily on the weather in late winter and spring. In general, the flowering period of the early varieties begins in March.

For example, if a rhododendron blooms in May, the flower buds for the following year can already be seen in August of the same year. Basically, therefore, varieties that bloom in autumn are not particularly late in bloom, but rather early. There is now a variety of rhododendron varieties that show around a third to half of their flowers from August to September. The remaining buds then open between the end of April and June of the following year. When exactly the flowers open is usually dependent on both the variety and the weather.
