However, the law allows “careful pruning and pruning” all year round. Nevertheless, you should also pay attention to breeding birds and small animals. Check if one of our feathered friends has already started nest building. If necessary, postpone the work until the young birds have fledged.
When should it be cut?
Many hobby gardeners swear by it to plant hedges around St. John's Day on the 24th. Cut back around June.
However, experts recommend pruning into shape as early as February for dense and even growth. At this point in time, the trees can cope better with this care measure, as they are not yet in the sap. At the beginning of summer, a second, careful maintenance cut is made.
Depending on the growth, the hedge keeps its shape well into the summer and only needs to be trimmed again in August or September.
How should hedges be trimmed?
Hedge trimming is not complicated, just stick to a few basics:
- Always cut so that the hedge has a trapezoidal shape and is slightly wider at the bottom. In this way, all areas receive light and do not become bare.
- When cutting, also use the natural growth habit of the plants as a guide.
- Tension a cord at the height you want your hedge to be after trimming. This will make the top surface nice and straight.
- Keep the electric hedge trimmer,(€19.00 at Amazon*) which should only be used on small-leaved shrubs, with arms almost straight, parallel to the trees.
- The mechanical hedge trimmer is held horizontally and guided out of the back with slight swinging movements. This ensures a level cutting pattern without dents.
- Never cut back conifers too much, because they will no longer sprout from needleless stumps.
tips
When it comes to timing, exceptions prove the rule. Pine and spruce hedges should always be cut in May, while forsythia or blood plum hedges should be cut immediately after flowering.
