The Weigela genus includes about 12 species, of which there are about 150 to 200 different varieties. They differ in their growth height, leaf color and flower color. Sweet weigela (Weigelia florida)

The lovely weigela reaches a height of up to 3 m and impresses with its lush, pink blossoms from May to June. Numerous varieties emerge from this species and adorn the gardens, for example, with patterned leaves or red foliage.

• 'Alexandra': The flowers of the Weigela 'Alexandra' shine in dark pink. Her leaves contrast beautifully in purple and brown. During the flowering period from May to June, the variety grows to 80 to 100 cm.

Weigela hybrid

These hybrids were usually created by crossing the Weigela florida with other species and convince with their mostly fragrant blossoms, which appear in May or June in white, pink and crimson tones.

Early flowering weigela (Weigela praecox)

Golden Weigela (Weigela middendorffiana)

The golden weigela is the only species that shows yellow flowers in early summer, which is why it is also known as the yellow-flowered weigela. The ornamental tree grows up to 150 cm high and, like its relatives, is very insect-friendly.

American weigela/mock weigela (Diervilla splendens)
