What are the black globules on basil?

If there are many small black globules on the ground and around the basil plant pot, it is the droppings from caterpillarsthat have infested the plant.

Why are the beads under my basil?

The excrement of Caterpillar arise because the pests basil nibble and therefore of course also digest must. Since this is a completely natural cycle, simply wiping away the black globules is not enough - as long as the caterpillars are not eliminated, new droppings will keep appearing.

How can a caterpillar infestation occur?

At outside standing basil butterflies and other insects lay their eggs, from which then the caterpillars as dreaded pests develop. If a specimen of the kitchen herb standing in the room is affected by the caterpillar infestation, it is usually the case that this plant has previously been outdoors and insects have also laid their eggs.

Are there other signs of caterpillar infestation?

How do I go about getting rid of the black globules?

In order to get rid of the globules, the cause must be fought - the caterpillars must go. There are two ways to do this:

  1. collect by hand or with tweezers
  2. cut off affected parts of the plant (proceed generously!)

The caterpillars were only successfully destroyed when no new globules could be found after a while.
To prevent this, spraying the potted plant with garlic water a good home remedy. Simply scald a crushed clove of garlic with boiling water and fill the cooled brew into a spray bottle.

Can Infested Basil Plants Be Saved?

The faster you act, the better are basil plants to save, under which black globules were found. Nothing speaks against eating the leaves - unless you feel disgusted.
Have the caterpillars already severely damaged the plant and it is visibly eaten or has black dots, it can no longer be saved in many cases.

Algae lime for prevention

To prevent insects from laying their eggs on the basil plants in the first place, it can help algae lime sprinkling on the ground - this method works just as well for basil in a pot as for basil planted out in the garden. However, it only helps preventively. In the event of an acute caterpillar infestation, it is essential to collect the pests as quickly as possible.
