AT A GLANCE
What distance should yew trees have from the neighboring property?
How much boundary distance do you have to keep when planting a yew tree?
First of all: Even a low yew hedge should not be placed directly on the property line - this is even forbidden in most federal states. As a rule, the so-called boundary distance - i.e. the distance between the property line and the wood - is measured according to the growth height and width of the crop and is subject to state law.

As a rule of thumb, a distance of at least 50 cm should be maintained for trees and shrubs up to two meters tall. If the plants are higher, a distance of at least one meter applies. However, the regulations differ from state to state, and individual municipalities may have issued separate regulations.
What distance should a yew tree have from the neighboring property?
The European yew (Taxus baccata) grows up to ten meters high and only in exceptional cases grows to a height of more than 15 meters. For planting a high-growing eibe, this means that in many federal states you have to keep a distance of at least three to four meters to the property line.
In addition, the neighbor must not suffer any serious disadvantages from planting a yew tree, i. H. the tree or hedge should not shade the neighboring property too much. Also consider that yew roots and overhanging branches cause problems for neighbors and can lift terrace slabs, for example.
What planting distance makes sense when planting yew trees?
For a yew hedge, you should place the trees as close together as possible: we therefore recommend planting three young yews per meter. If, on the other hand, the yew is planted as a solitaire, you should plan the following distances:
- Columnar yew 'Fastigata Robusta': one to three meters planting distance
- Ground cover grater 'Repandens': 1 per square meter
- Yew: 2 meters
Also note that before under behind a two meter high yew hedge approx. 90 centimeters of space remains. This makes it easier for you to cut back later, and the hedge can also grow in width.
Tip
5 year objection period
When planting a tree, your neighbor has up to five years to object, according to current court rulings. After that, he usually has to accept the tree, especially since the felling or pruning of an older tree cannot be carried out so easily. Nevertheless, the principle of mutual consideration applies: the tree must not unduly restrict your neighbor's use of the property.
