We love summer and fear wasps. Our dilemma, however, is that warm temperatures and these ominously buzzing insects go hand in hand. So that we can enjoy being outdoors to the fullest without being stung, we have to keep the wasps at a distance. There should be a helpful home remedy in every coffee can: the coffee powder. The effect of coffee against wasps is controversial, but anyone can easily check for themselves.
Coffee against wasps
The wasps do not need to be poured an extra cup of coffee. In order to drive these annoying insects out of our radius, the dry coffee powder is sufficient as a base.
The noblest and most expensive type of coffee doesn't have to believe in it. It doesn't even have to be fresh coffee powder. You can dry coffee grounds that have already been brewed, which you would otherwise probably use as plant fertilizer or throw away, and keep them ready for this purpose.
Generate smoke
Coffee powder smells fine and wasps have a good olfactory organ. Still, that's not enough to drive them away effectively. The coffee maker only develops its predicted effect against wasps when it is set on fire.
Coffee powder does not strike flames like wood, but instead glows and develops thick clouds of smoke. For us humans, the smoke smells spicy like coffee, so that it doesn't bother us in the somewhat isolated container.
It is not clear whether the coffee smell intensified by the burning or other ingredients in the smoke are driving the wasps away. Many users claim that it should work. Experts, on the other hand, speculate that this method cannot work. If the question remains why you haven't already tested it, then you no longer have to speculate. Be your own expert and give it a try. This home remedy is completely natural, readily available, and only costs a few cents per use.
Wasps are not in themselves aggressive animals that sting indiscriminately. They only attack when threatened to fill up. Most of the time they are therefore allowed to coexist peacefully with us. The coffee powder can only be used against you if the situation requires it. For example when they besiege our coffee table outdoors.
Light the coffee powder
- Pour one to two tablespoons of ground coffee into an ovenproof container. Bowls made of ceramic and porcelain can shatter, a metal sheet, on the other hand, is ideal. Ashtrays and old, fireproof saucepans can also be used for this experiment. On the other hand, unsightly residues can stick to new saucepans over time.
- Find a place a few meters away. It should be a fire-proof base.
- Light the coffee powder with a match and let it glow.
tip: When setting up the container, also watch out for wind or wind. Wind direction so that the smoke does not blow over to your coffee table.
Duration of effect
The coffee powder works as long as it is glowing. This will be the case for about 1-2 hours. If you want to drive away the annoying insects for longer, you would have to add more coffee powder and, if necessary, re-light. Do not blindly rely on the effects of coffee on wasps. Be careful and avoid hectic movements or attempted killing if you see a wasp near you. This can make the insect aggressive and attract more specimens.
tip: If you are with a whole Wasp nest struggle, you should enlist the help of a pest control company. The fire brigade is not responsible for this and you are not allowed to fight or relocate the legally protected wasps on your own.
Take precautionary measures
Even small, burning amounts of coffee powder should not be underestimated. Set up the container so that it is out of the reach of children and pets. They can easily knock it over or out of curiosity or accidentally touch.
- the container can get very hot
- be sure to set up safely
- do not use in closed rooms
If you have to move the hot container, be sure to use kitchen gloves, otherwise there is a risk of burns!
Alternatives
If coffee against wasps does not bring you resounding success, you do not have to resort to chemistry immediately. After all, this does not leave you and our environment unaffected. Try some other home remedies until you find the wasp repellent that's ideal for you. This could be for example:
- an essential oil like mint, Tea tree oil, Lavender or eucalyptus
- Basil plant as a table decoration
- a lemon peppered with cloves
- sliced garlic cloves
