AT A GLANCE
Can an apple tree be cultivated in the apartment?
An apple tree cannot be cared for permanently in an apartment. It needs the change of seasons and cannot cope with the extreme conditions that prevail indoors, especially in winter.
Why doesn't the apple tree do well indoors?
Various site factors, the interaction of which is important, are responsible for the good growth of apple trees (Malus domestica).
So must:
- Light,
- ambient temperature,
- water and nutrient supply,
- the changing of the seasons
meet the individual needs of the fruit tree. Since this is not the case with an apple tree indoors, unlike indoor plants, it will sooner or later die.
Tip
Apple trees do well in pots
But you don't have to do without your own apple tree, provided you have a balcony or terrace. A pillar apple or a duo tree grafted on a slow-growing rootstock thrives well in a tub, takes up very little space and enchants the outdoor seating area in spring with its blossoms and later with the pretty-looking, aromatic-tasting ones fruits.
