In Germany, two species of thistle are under protection: the Alpine thistle (Eryngium alpinum) and the silver thistle (Carlina acaulis). They are protected because they have become rare in some areas due to human removal and habitat changes.

Under nature protection are in Germany two types of thistle:

Why are these thistles protected?
In some areas these are thistles only very rarely found. Not only have too many of the spiky beauties been harvested by humans, but the conversion of sparse lands to forest or intense grassland has also made them disappear the thistles contributed.
What does the protected Alpen Mannstreu look like?
The alpine thistle, native to Central Europe, grows impressively eighty centimeters high and forms with their easily bluish, strong flower stalks an impressive sight with the blue collar.
The flowering period of the Alpen Mannstreus, which is only native to the Alps, extends from July to September. In autumn, the ripe seeds fall off along with the flower heads and are then blown about by the wind.
What does the protected silver thistle look like?
The flower center of this formerly widespread perennial radially surrounded by silvery-white shimmering petals. The interior consists of hundreds of very dense tubular flowers, which are only eaten by insects with a long proboscis such as bees, bumblebees or butterflies can be pollinated.
Even before rain falls, the silver leaves of this alpine flower close due to the increase in humidity. That is why the silver thistle is considered an important weather messenger for hikers and mountaineers.
Can you cultivate the protected thistles in the garden?
