Note: On the internet there are recommendations here and there to cut the immature physalis to harvest, to put in a box and cover with paper. However, such attempts are doomed to failure.

What are the characteristics of mature Physalis?

Ripe physalis are mainly characterized by two characteristics:

  • the brownish-parchment-like dried-up lantern covers
  • the rich orange tone of the fruit

By the way: As soon as they are fully ripe, the berries usually fall off the plant by themselves. This is the clearest sign of maturity - but only if the above-mentioned characteristics also apply. Because sometimes the fruits fall off when they are damaged.

Tip

Caution: DO NOT eat unripe physalis!

Impatience combined with a big appetite can of course lead to the fruits of the physalis being harvested and eaten unripe. However, this is strongly discouraged, because the unripe berries are slightly poisonous and can, for example, result in an unpleasant stomach upset. So better keep your hands off unripe physalis and be patient instead.
