Unlike annual flowers, perennials are perennials. They remain in one place for many years and play an important role in the design of rock gardens and flower beds. Native perennials are usually more robust than the high-bred annual flowering plants and more resistant to diseases and pests. Even frost does not bother most perennials. perennial species

Perennials are perennial, herbaceous plants. In contrast to bushes and shrubs, the above-ground parts of the plant do not lignify. Perennials form a new flower every year. Perennials include:

  • bedding perennials
  • groundcover perennials
  • ferns
  • grasses

Perennials are suitable for permanent planting in rock gardens, flower beds, pond edges and raised beds.

perennials in winter

Most varieties are hardy. Even the withered leaves do not have to be removed, they provide additional protection in freezing temperatures. In winter, the above-ground parts die off. They say the plants are retreating. They overwinter in tubers, bulbs or in offshoots of the shoot, the rhizomes.
Perennials form hibernation buds, from which new shoots occur again and again. Some species remain leafy green all winter.

Tip:

Even hardy perennials need moisture in winter. Water the plants again before the frost begins.
