- As with painting with wood paint, the stairs should first be sanded down and thoroughly cleaned. Residues of paint, varnish or other materials must be removed without leaving any residue. Just like dust and other dirt, they could have a negative impact on the result.
- When the stairs are clean and dry, a primer is applied first. This must be matched to the following paint. The manufacturer's information must be taken into account for the drying time.
- Once the primer has been applied and completely dried, painting can begin. A foam roller can be used for the larger surfaces of the steps. Edges and corners are better painted with a brush.
- Finally, a seal is applied. This extends the durability of the paint and allows it to remain attractive for a long time. This protective measure is particularly recommended for heavily used wooden stairs.
The drying time varies depending on the product.
Tip:
If several layers of paint are necessary, sufficient drying should take place. On the other hand, the layers should each be roughened with a grinder and fine sandpaper. This achieves stronger adhesion.
glaze
In contrast to paint and varnish, glaze should preferably be used indoors. With an appropriate seal, however, it can also be used outdoors. The advantage of glaze is that:
- the wooden surface remains matt
- the grain continues to shine through
- it is easy to apply
- variable results can be achieved by order
However, the disadvantage of glazes as wood protection is that they are less resistant. Lacquers and paints are therefore the better choice for heavily frequented stairs. With a seal, however, a glaze can also last a long time. The decisive and unique selling point is that the grain of the wood is still visible. Even when two layers are applied, the natural pattern can be seen, but it is whitened.
The procedure is as follows:
- Clean the wood and remove any residue of lacquer, paint or oil.
- Slightly roughen the surface with a grinder so that the glaze can penetrate better.
- Treat the steps with a paint roller and the selected glaze.
- After drawing in and drying, it can be decided whether a second layer is desired. The grain becomes less conspicuous and the white covers more.
- When the desired effect has been achieved, a seal can be applied. It is also possible to use clear lacquer for this purpose. Depending on personal taste, this can be matt or glossy. In any case, it extends the service life, increases the resilience and makes cleaning easier.
