Cherry wood is particularly noticeable because of its attractive grain, but it also has positive properties in terms of strength. As a result, it is often used in interior design and furniture construction in the premium class. It is also correspondingly expensive to purchase. Cherry wood has a very fine, filigree and soft wood radiance or grain. The color of the heartwood ranges between medium and dark brown, greenish and yellowish tints are possible and not uncommon. When it comes to sapwood, there is often a combination of reddish, whitish or greyish nuances. As a result, it appears cooler overall than the heartwood.
Properties and Resistances
The wood has only a medium hardness, but is very strong. It also proves to be extremely flexible or pliable. As a result, the wood is often used in arts and crafts. However, it is also used in designer furniture and in the construction of musical instruments. It is important to choose wood that has dried slowly and in a controlled manner. Otherwise it must be expected that the wood will warp – i.e. will be deformed. However, steaming can reduce the risk of this and also improve the natural properties of the cherry wood.
Tip:
It should also be noted that cherry wood is not resistant to fungi, weather and insects. So unless it is properly protected, it should not be used outdoors.

The cherry wood comes naturally from the cherry tree, but there are different species. A distinction is made between European, American and Indian cherries. The European and American variants are quite common in European trade. Indian cherry wood, on the other hand, is hardly offered here.
The difference between the cherry wood types is of course not only in origin and designation. The main differences, however, lie in the color and the raw density.
American cherry

European cherry
- predominantly light and golden brown shades
- average bulk density: about 0.54 grams per cubic centimeter
However, there are no differences in the other properties.
Price
Anyone who wants to buy the wood of the cherry is of course also interested in the price. There are clear differences here, especially in terms of origin. 1,000 to 1,200 euros must be planned for one cubic meter of European cherry wood. The wood of the American cherry tree even costs 1,500 to 1,700 euros per cubic meter.
Price differences are mainly due to storage and drying as well as possible pre-treatments such as steaming. The dimensions of the cherry wood also play a role. Since there are considerable fluctuations in costs, it is advisable to carry out a price comparison before buying.
Tip:
Remnants and smaller dimensions can be purchased at significantly lower prices. Depending on the dealer, discounts are also possible for larger projects. In addition to the price of the cherry wood, the costs for shipping or delivery should also be taken into account.
