  • When does your grass trimmer need a new cutting line?
  • This is how the replacement line is installed in the grass trimmer

At first it must have been a pleasure to use the grass trimmer and watch it scoop up even the most hidden blade of grass caught by its rapidly rotating thread without endangering the adjoining house wall or the nearby shrub in the slightest bring. But happiness does not last forever, every use wears out the line in the grass trimmer, only if you regularly correct this wear and tear will you be able to enjoy your grass trimmer for a long time:

When does your grass trimmer need a new cutting line?

First of all, you should check whether there is still cutting line that simply needs to be fed. Because your lawn trimmer is usually equipped with a full line spool, and the cutting line gets a little shorter with each individual use. You should therefore regularly give in some thread, whenever you have the feeling that the grass trimmer is losing its performance. To do this, you only have to tap most devices once on the floor during operation, this releases the thread retention of the spool, so new thread is unwound. The devices are equipped with a special blade that cuts the line to the right length, now you can work really well with the grass trimmer for a while.

If new line appears to be necessary after a period that is actually too short, the line may have come into contact with firmer material when cutting the lawn. A pebble in Lawn can also cause the thread to break, and at some point there is not enough thread left on the spool. Both continuous use and occasional contact with harder obstacles will eventually make it necessary to install a replacement line:

This is how the replacement line is installed in the grass trimmer

First, you would need to determine if you can even install replacement line on your model, or if you need a whole new line head. This variant is available on some cheaper devices, then you only have to buy the new head and replace it according to the description in the manual. (If you're thinking about buying a lawn trimmer, very inexpensive models that need a new line head every time will tend to cost you more money in the long run.)

With the slightly more expensive lawn trimmers, mostly with brand names, the line head does not have to be changed when the line wears off in the cut. Rather, you can open the thread button and insert a spare thread. This is how it works:

  • You buy a replacement line of the right diameter, these lines are available in all shops that also sell grass trimmers.
  • Refer to the grass trimmer manual for the correct gauge of replacement line.
  • Now open the line head of the trimmer, usually you have to press two clamps on the sides.
  • The cover of the line head can now be removed and you can take out the line spool.
  • The replacement line is trimmed to about 75 percent of the line length permitted according to the operating instructions. Experience has shown that the automatic line feed works best with this length.
  • The ends of the thread are tied in one vice or fixed with clamps on the workbench.
  • Now bend the thread exactly in the middle and hook the bend into the thread spool.
  • There is an extra guide in the bobbin for each half of the thread, around which you now wind the threads tightly and clockwise.
  • The ends of the thread can now be freed, for them there are slots on the edge of the spool into which they are clamped.
  • Once you have replaced the spool, pull the two ends through the holes in the sides of the line head until they are about stick out 20 cm.
  • Now the cover can be attached again, the grass trimmer is ready for work again.

Are you not completely satisfied with your grass trimmer because the plastic line is already broken by a thick blade, e.g. B. in a piece of meadow, failed? The ideal, slightly more powerful addition to the lawn trimmer is the brushcutterwho does her work with a blade of metal!
