frequently asked Questions

What do the hazard categories mean?

The hazard is presented in categories I to IV.
I stands for "extremely endangered". Category II animals are “Critically Endangered”. Category III designates “endangered (e)” breeds and under IV breeds are currently listed that are not endangered but are nevertheless under observation.
The classification is based on the stock figures. It is checked in Germany at regular intervals. Funding projects and raising the awareness of chicken farmers for endangered species can positively change endangerment classes and almost extinct breeds can be preserved.

Who decides which chicken breeds are red listed?

Since 2012 The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food publishes an overview domestic poultry breeds with information on the endangerment class and the number of existing breeding pairs.

Can beginners keep old chicken breeds?

Some breeds, such as German Sparrowhawks or Barnevelders, are very undemanding and are excellent for beginners. We recommend joining a breed poultry club. In exchange with other chicken keepers and breeders you will find out what you need to watch out for.
