When the gardening season comes to an end, the gardener wants to rest and turn his attention to things other than the garden. But its work is usually not done yet, there are many plants that make some demands on wintering. Plant lovers in particular, who appreciate foreign guests, have a lot to do: there are plants that don't have a special treatment can overwinter with us because they are at home in a climate similar to ours given is. However, all plants that come from the tropics or subtropics or from Mediterranean areas do not really cope well with the winter here. These plants always need your help in winter because they have special requirements in terms of temperature, light requirements and humidity. Therefore, before considering how to overwinter these plants, you need to carefully explore the needs of each of these plants. Then you can start looking for suitable hibernation quarters, you usually have more options around the house and garden available than you might realize right away: If you have a greenhouse, you can usually meet the needs of these plants quite easily fulfill. A greenhouse can be made frost-proof, has enough light, can be ventilated and can even be heated in an emergency. Quite a few plants can overwinter in the basement, at least if you don't (entirely) heat your basement. If the temperatures in your basement do not rise above about 10 degrees and do not fall below about 2 degrees, all plants that take a winter break can overwinter here. They can get along without light in winter, they just have to be housed in a frost-proof place. These include various plant guests that shed their leaves (eg. B. Brugmansia, Solanum) and some flower species (e.g. B. fuchsias, petunias) who like to enjoy a break after the summer season. Unfortunately, if your basement is also heated or heats up itself because the heating is here, it is not suitable for letting any plants overwinter in it. Because all plants that can overwinter in the warmth continue to grow in the winter - and therefore they also need light, all the light that winter has to offer here. Other places that might make suitable wintering grounds for exotics are the conservatory, stairwell, and the garage, with a little thought and information you will be sure to find a good spot for any foreign guests find. If absolutely nothing can be found: There are service providers who help with overwintering plants. If you're one of those gardeners who like to surround yourself with native plants, you'll have an easier time overwintering. These plants are adapted to our conditions and need almost no help during wintering. Only potted plants that have spent the summer on the balcony or terrace should be prepared for the winter and are not simply forgotten about the cold season, then they will no longer be able to come next spring experience. And above all, you should think of one thing: almost all plants need a little water from time to time, even in winter!
