Pruning roses is often referred to as a science in its own right. Since it is absolutely necessary for flowering and growth, Hybrid Tea roses must be pruned annually. But don't worry, this challenge is also easy to master with good cutting tools and the right approach.

Cut

Hybrid tea roses must be pruned in order to stimulate new, vigorous growth and so that the rose bush also gets light on the inside. This is how the hybrid tea becomes through the cut:

  • tapered
  • thinned out
  • freed from diseased and dead shoots.

time

The best time to cut hybrid tea roses is in spring. It is difficult to specify the exact time according to the calendar, as this varies from region to region. It is important that there is no longer any threat of severe frost. But there are clues in nature that you can use as a guide:

  • Rosebuds begin to sprout
  • Forsythia are in full bloom

If these natural processes are transferred to the calendar, the spring pruning of the hybrid tea roses falls between the end of February and the beginning of April.

cutting guide

For a successful cut, it is best to proceed in two steps. In the first cut, shorten all shoots of the tea rose to 20 to 40 centimeters. Ideally, each shoot will then have between three and six buds.

Tip:

Fast-growing shoots are shortened to five to seven buds, weak-growing shoots to two to three buds.

In the second step, remove all the shoots up to the trunk

  • weak
  • dead or
  • lazy

are. You should also completely remove one or two old shoots every year. Shoots older than three to four years are topped at the base of the plant. In order for more light to get into the rose bush, the weaker shoots that cross each other are completely removed. This also prevents disease and pest infestation, because the two shoots can interact with each other hurt, and the injured areas quickly become gateways for pests and pathogens.

The incision itself is always made half a centimeter above an outward-pointing eye. Do not cut the shoot straight, but rather at a slight angle. This allows rainwater to run off better and the cut to heal faster. When cutting, use sharp and clean rose scissors to make a smooth cut.

Tip:

If you don't get a smooth cut, try making the cut again below the bruised area.

Clean rose scissors are the be-all and end-all when cutting roses. You should therefore disinfect the scissors before cutting, because pathogens are quickly transmitted through the rose scissors. If diseased or pest-infested shoots have to be removed, then you should clean the rose scissors after each cut.

Care

With hybrid tea, pruning is the most important care measure. The noble plants are only fertilized twice a year, preferably in March and the end of May. They only need additional water when it is extremely dry and hot in summer. Then only water the roses twice a week.

Tip:

When watering, be careful not to get water on the leaves, as wet leaves increase the risk of disease on the delicate roses.

In order for the rose to develop new flowers, you should remove faded flowers immediately. This is also a preventive measure against diseases and pests. Always cut to below the rose petal, which is below the blossom.
