Heyday
Although there are many different varieties of this violet family, this one is by far the most most widespread, almost only found in domestic gardens, the common Garden pansies. Actually, the plant is perennial and can also be included in the garden design for at least two years from a visual point of view. However, since the plants lose their growth habit very quickly, they are only used annually in most cases. Since they are able to produce flowers almost over the entire warm season from around April to autumn, annual cultivation has the great advantage that the time of flower formation can be set almost arbitrarily can. In order to achieve the following point in time for flowering, the measures listed are recommended:
Spring and summer blooms
- Sow in late summer and autumn of the previous year, around August to September
- Alternatively, move the plants forward over the winter months in a cool living room or alternatively in a sufficiently bright basement or side room
- The first flowers appear from the end of March, especially April to June, with lush, recurring flowers
- Extension of the flowering period is possible by consistently removing faded inflorescences, then the flowering period is possible until August
Note: If plants are kept for several years, the flower formation takes place in the same way as the young plants sown in autumn and raised over the winter. So perennial can be seen here as a clear indication of the spring bloom.
Autumn bloom
- Sow in early summer from May to the end of June / beginning of July
- Flowering depending on the time of sowing in October and November, with mild winters in sheltered locations throughout the winter
tip: If you decide at short notice for a design with plants that bloom in autumn, you can also purchase them at the desired late point in time for the bloom to develop.
In summary, it can be said that the pansy is not only extremely diverse in terms of color, but also in terms of its flower. With a range from March through November, this small but surprisingly expressive plant allows for a largely seasonal Garden design. If it is used for several years, it is tolerable that it remains tied to the usual vegetation phases. For a different design, for example, there is a combination with other plants with different flowering times or the combination with annual specimens.
