Bald spots in the race are very annoying because they disturb the overall picture and make the green look unkempt. However, there are "holes" in the best lawn and can even show themselves if it is carefully tended and cared for. The only thing that can help here is mending and re-sowing. Our instructions reveal how to proceed. And so that bald spots can be prevented, we also give the appropriate tips on care.

causes

Bald spots in the lawn can show up for a variety of reasons. These include, among others:

1. Age of the plants

Grass also ages and can die over time. Older plants often no longer withstand frost, especially in winter. In spring at the latest, yellowed and brown areas or even bald spots will appear. This cannot be avoided even with the best care and only overseeding helps.

2. Missing or incorrect care

If the grass lacks water and nutrients, it is weakened. This not only affects growth, but also makes it more susceptible to damage, for example from frost or drought. Regular fertilization, appropriate watering and frequent mowing from spring to autumn prevent and keep the lawn healthy and strong.

3. Burns from the sun

Bald spots in the lawn can also form when the grass burns. It is important to water it sufficiently and to choose the right time to mow.

4. garden furniture

Garden furniture, but also other foreign bodies on the grass, not only leave bruises. If they stand in the same place for a long time, the grass in this area initially turns yellow or even whitish and then dies.
The standing areas of flower pots, benches, chairs and tables, but also, for example, cuttings from shrubs and trees that have been left lying around, can create spots of this kind. It therefore makes sense to keep changing locations and removing clippings as quickly as possible.

Gaps in the lawn can arise when sowing the lawn

Repair your lawn - step by step

If there are bald spots on the lawn, they can be repaired comparatively easily. To do this, only the following points have to be observed:

1. When the outside temperature is consistently around 10 ° C and no more severe night frosts are to be expected, the ideal time for reseeding has come. A resistant type of lawn should be chosen that matches the color of the rest of the lawn. It would, of course, be ideal to use the same seeds for the subsequent sowing as for the rest of the grass. So there are no noticeable differences.

2. First of all, dead plant parts and roots are removed from the bare spots. Moss and weeds should also be removed.

3. The earth is slightly hooked up or roughened so that the seeds can penetrate the soil well. It is important that the overseeding also takes place beyond the border of the bald spot. Otherwise clearly visible distances could result.

4. If necessary, the seeds are lightly watered to encourage germination and growth. In addition, the growth can be given a boost with fertilizer. It is also beneficial to cover the newly sown area with a very close-meshed net so that the seeds are protected from birds and other animals.

Sow correctly

When sowing, it is not just a question of the right time, but also of the method of sowing. So both when and how. Because in order to repair the hole in the grass, she has to seed be distributed as evenly as possible. There are two ways of doing this.

For larger areas, a Gritter are used. Smaller gaps are spread once broadly and once longitudinally - i.e. from two different directions with a difference of 90 degrees. In this way, a particularly dense and even distribution can be achieved.

Distribute the seeds evenly when sowing the lawn

Prevent bald spots

While bald spots cannot always be prevented, the risk of them can be significantly reduced with the right approach. However, it is necessary to take the following factors into account:

care

The grass plants need sufficient water and occasional fertilization for healthy and vigorous growth. If you want to make watering easy for yourself, use a lawn sprinkler. Special lawn fertilizer, which is brought out with a spreader, is ideal for fertilization. Iron fertilizer can also be used.

ventilation

When the grass plants weaken, moss and weeds have easy play. The more these grow and spread, the more they weaken the grass and as a result can literally suffocate the lawn. The remedy here is the regular one Scarifying. The moss is removed and the soil aerated.

mowing

Regular mowing of the lawn not only benefits the well-groomed appearance. The care measure also ensures that the plants branch out more strongly and thus become denser. This means that annoying weeds and moss have a lower chance of spreading. However, care should be taken that the mowing does not take place in the blazing sun. Otherwise the cut surfaces could burn.

Pressure points

Planters, garden furniture and clippings can create pressure points and discolored stains as they continuously shade the grass. It is therefore advisable to change your location more often. This distributes pressure and shadows more evenly and prevents bald spots.

tip: Special lawn fertilizer is an easy way to provide the grass with nutrients. However, it is not the optimum. It is better if a soil sample is analyzed first and then the fertilizer is matched to it.
