Maintain rattan furniture: clean, freshen up and paint

Rattan furniture is made of a natural and usually braided material, which can make cleaning, care and painting difficult. It is therefore important to use the correct means and to choose the correct measures.

Cleaning and care

While rattan furniture may seem difficult to clean and maintain at the same time, it is very easy to do. Only a few work steps are necessary. The following guide shows how to do it:

Step 1

A mixture of about 100 milliliters of linseed oil, a spoonful of turpentine and ten liters of warm water is mixed in such a way that an emulsion is created.

step 2

The emulsion is spread over the furniture with a lint-free cloth so that it can also penetrate the cracks. Here, on the one hand, dirt is removed and, on the other hand, the oil takes care of it

a protection of the wicker furniture.

step 3

When the entire furniture has been rubbed with the mixture, it should be rinsed with cold water. This will remove excess emulsion.

The chair, armchair or table can then be rubbed lightly with a dry cloth. As a rule, however, it is sufficient to let the piece of furniture air dry. It is therefore beneficial to carry out the measure on a warm and dry day.

Tip: In the case of heavier soiling, it may be advisable to use a brush with soft bristles in addition to a cloth.

Basic cleaning

If a piece of rattan furniture is so dirty that the solution alone has no effect, it can be brushed off and vacuumed before cleaning with a damp cloth. Dry impurities are removed, so that the

subsequent damp cleaning less has to be removed.

When cleaning with a damp cloth, not only a cloth or a brush can be used. A higher water pressure is also possible. Either a garden hose with an adjustable nozzle or a high-pressure cleaner with variable pressure can be used for this.

Refresh and protection

Maintain rattan furniture

If the color and protection of the Rattan furniture should be maintained, a refresher should be carried out regularly. The easiest and fastest way to freshen up is to use a spray. Colorless rattan care and protection can be used without any problems. It is only important that the piece of furniture has been thoroughly cleaned beforehand and is completely dry. Old paint, varnish and stain should also be removed.

To brush

When painting rattan furniture with color, the procedure is also comparatively simple - as long as the correct steps are followed. These are:

preparation

The piece of furniture should first be cleaned thoroughly and then cleaned well

dry out.

Sanding down

Sanding with fine sandpaper prepares the surface optimally to absorb the means of protection and coloring.

Pickling

The stain is first applied with a soft brush. This measure prepares the natural material well for the following treatment.

paint

When the stain is completely dry - the manufacturer's instructions should be observed here - the lacquer can be applied. Spraying the varnish on is comparatively easy, but there is a risk of thicker layers of varnish in the depressions. Painting is therefore usually the better choice. A brush with long and soft bristles should be chosen.

Multiple applications

Since mostly not all areas are covered with stain and varnish, different angles and different positions should be taken and taken into account. Every fiber of the rattan furniture is to be brushed or sprayed. This can ensure that all strands are covered and complete protection is guaranteed.

Tip: Spraying can be quite useful. However, quick and even movements must be carried out. It can therefore help to practice on other objects first.
